Migrants are people who come from another country to live in your country.
The first migrants to Australia were British.
They came on the First Fleet in 1788. Today
Australia has many different groups, who are seeking a better life, that have migrated
here.

In the years before 1950 most migrants to Australia were English, Scottish, Welsh,
Irish or Chinese. After World War 2 people came from Italy, Greece, Turkey and
Yugoslavia as refugees.

After 1970 many Asian people from Cambodia and
Vietnam arrived. Recently war in the Middle East has seen an arrival of people from
Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Iran. Lately many South Africans and South
American people have migrated as well.

Migrants bring new kinds of food, skills, religions and customs to their new land.
They hope to build better communities that are great places to live. Migrants also add
to the workforce of their new country.
